COSTS

It's no secret that weddings can cost a lot of money, no matter how much you plan and budget accordingly. Some couples have taken their budgets to a whole new level. According to reports, the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton itself totaled $34 million.

Aside from ordinary expenses such as venue, photography, and catering, the endless options for upgrades and special add-ons can cause wedding costs to add up.

Based on a WeddingWire study, nearly 60% of couples increase their initial budget, primarily due to finding things along the way that they felt they "needed to have" and realizing they may have underestimated at first pass.

The study showed that when couples expected the wedding budget to be around $23,000, they usually ended up with the reality of spending $30,000 for their wedding.

In 2019, couples spent, on average, roughly $28,000 on their wedding, which equals about $215 per guest.

So what will your wedding cost? Within every single region, state, and even city, the average cost of a wedding is different and varies greatly. In reality, if you want to work with reputable vendors, you will see a wedding for 150 people at a venue with all professional vendors and a standard number of details ranging anywhere from $35,000-$60,000 depending on your location.

This is not to say that you cannot have a wedding that costs less — there are many amazing and creative celebrations at a lower price range. For the majority of weddings though, the wedding location, guest list size,  the amount of food and beverage, the labor that goes into producing the wedding from professionals, the number of details and customizations, the number of upgraded rentals, etc. will often require a budget that is at least $35,000-$60,000.

Keep in mind that hiring an award-winning professional wedding photographer is one way to ensure that your memories will last a lifetime.

So if you do not have the budget yet, one option is to talk with your families about who can pay for what: Some brides' families still pick up the entire tab (as is "tradition"), but it's more and more common for grooms' families to participate too.

How do you bring up the conversation? For many couples, talking to each family separately is the best way to have truly open discussions.

If your budget seems intimidating and you want to find areas to save, don't worry. You can always prioritize aspects of your wedding to help you cut back.
