Important questions to ask your wedding photographer

You put so much time and effort into planning your wedding, you’ll want every special moment to be captured. But how do you know which wedding photographer is right for you? We have rounded up a list of questions to ask your wedding photographer that will help you to narrow down your options when it comes to your wedding photography:

Price

What is included in your standard packages? Can we see product samples to evaluate the quality? What add-ons do the more expensive packages include? What is the starting price for prints? Do you charge travel fees?

Don’t create a wedding budget without doing a little bit of research. The average couple budgets between $2,500-$4,000 for their wedding day photography. A budget like this gives most couples an average package from an average photographer. They will receive full wedding day coverage but rarely extras like bridal sessions, an amazing boudoir experience, creative engagement sessions, advanced artist retouching, premium quality albums, save the date cards/magnets or amazing wall art.  If you want an above average package, you have to expect to pay an above average price.

While the price is always a factor when selecting your wedding photographer, it should not be the only thing that matters to you. All too often we hear horror stories from couples who made a decision for their wedding photography based purely on price. Making a decision purely on price usually turns out to be foolish in the end.

When your wedding is all said and done, your wedding photography will be all you have to remember your wedding day. After all, you get what you pay for. So for your once-in-a-lifetime wedding day, hiring someone with proven experience will provide you with not only stunning images but peace of mind that you made the right choice. And if your wedding photographer cares about you, they might offer you a payment plan to make your dreams come true!

Insurance

Does your wedding photographer have liability insurance?

Professional wedding photographers should have the proper insurance for their business. Liability insurance protects the photographer against equipment theft, but more importantly, it provides liability protection in case somebody from your wedding party or your guests trips over the photographer’s bag/equipment and breaks their arm or leg. If your wedding photographer does not have liability insurance, chances are that they are new to the wedding industry and are not taking your needs seriously.

Equipment

What type of equipment does the photographer use? Does the photographer use full-frame sensor cameras that allow your wedding images to be simultaneously recorded onto two cards for backup? Does your photographer have backup equipment at the wedding?

Keep in mind that not everybody uses professional photography equipment and comes with professional backup equipment. While you might not notice a quality difference on small images on the internet or social media, you will notice the difference once you ask for bigger prints for your wall art. Anything smaller than a full-frame sensor camera is not the quality you need for a lifetime of memories. Professional equipment also allows professional photographers to record your moments in real-time to multiple cards to have an instant backup in the case that a memory card fails. Additional backup cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment are key for a truly professional wedding photographer to capture everything!

Backup

Can the photographer provide you with details on their data backup plan?

The moments captured on your wedding day cannot be recreated. Therefore, it is important to safeguard the images before and after editing. Everyone has heard the story about someone whose wedding photos were lost in a hard drive or memory card failure. To prevent a data loss, we encourage you to look for a wedding photographer with a fireproof safe and a proven backup strategy – a combination of local on-site backups with multiple offsite locations. The cameras of the photographers also need to be able to record your images to TWO different memory cards to prevent the loss during your wedding day!

Style

How does the wedding photographer break the mold of traditional, cookie-cutter wedding photography?

The best way to avoid cookie-cutter wedding photography is to hire an experienced, creative and professional photographer who spends a lot of time to learn everything about your style and personality as a couple before they ever touch their camera. Innovative and creative photographers have an amazing portfolio with couple-focused editing styles, testimonials, and multiple awards to prove it.

What is the photographer’s experience in choreographing a scene?

In a world of full of amateur photographers who do not understand the art of good posing, the people’s perception of posing has become somewhat of a dirty word. But posing you, the bride is all about making you look and feel beautiful. As beautiful as you are and with a few simple directions, a great photographer can make you shine brighter than ever before. With natural, artistic and candid posing techniques, an award-winning photographer will provide you with a truly unique wedding photography experience! Their goal should be to make you look both stunning and natural!

What is the photographer’s experience using on- and off-camera flash equipment?

Many photographers claim to be “natural light photographers.” That’s the photographer language for “I don’t use flash because I don’t understand how it works.” The results are often overexposed backgrounds, grainy images and dark shadows in eye sockets and under noses. While your wedding photographer may choose not to use flash photography, they should be able to master lighting equipment just in case the circumstances don’t provide for a naturally beautiful option.

Artistic Retouching

How does the wedding photographer edit the images?

Keep in mind that with truly professional wedding photographers, you are not just paying for a few hours on your wedding day. Experienced professional photographers take a lot of time editing your images by adjusting for exposure, clarity, vibrancy, white balance, contrast, sharpness, color and cropping. While some photographers batch-process all their images, most award-winning wedding photographers believe in hand-retouching every image to provide you with artistically and technically correct wall art and albums!

Look at the differences of a basic edit (one that is done by the average photographer) on the left and a professionally retouched image on the right:

With Peter Tögel Photography, your wall art and album images will receive advanced master edits that include but are not limited to removal of facial glare, hair changes, skin smoothing, facial and/or body slimming, head swaps, opening eyes, retouching scars, extending, removing or replacing the background, etc.)! These kinds of advanced, artistic master edits will take anywhere between 20 minutes to several hours per image. With discount photographers, stunning albums and artworks are rarely the results.

Engagement, Bridal & Boudoir

Does the photographer offer other types of photo sessions?

Complimentary photography sessions allow you a more comfortable and stress-free experience on your wedding day. They allow the photography team to learn more about what you like and what your preferred styles/angles are. But that is only the beginning! While a bridal session (studio or outdoors) is a great way for a dress, makeup and hair rehearsal, engagement photos are great for save-the-date cards, wedding invitations, wedding websites, social media and wedding programs.

Thinking of surprising your future spouse with a peek at your passionate side? Boudoir photography is a sexy new trend that is very popular as a wedding day gift from a bride to her groom. Because you have worked hard for your wedding body, you are in the best shape of your life and your eyes and skin are literally glowing with excitement!

Client for Life

Does your photographer offer complimentary photo sessions after your wedding day?

With your wedding day, your amazing journey is just starting! Peter Tögel Photography’s Elite Clients receive a complimentary photography session every year starting with the year after their wedding for as long as Peter and Karen Tögel are living! This is a great way to obtain maternity images, baby portraits or new headshots from a photographer with whom you are already completely comfortable and confident.

Wedding Albums

Will your wedding photographer create a wedding album for you? Can you see samples to see what the quality is?

What will you do with all your images from your photographer? Do you want to be one of the many couples of this generation that will look back in a few years to memories without images? Just doing digital files of wedding photos will just do that. Most smart people choose to place them in a beautifully designed wedding album that your wedding photographer will provide you with. Don’t underestimate the importance of a wedding album from your wedding day. A premium album will outlast CDs, DVDs, and USB-Thumb drives! In a few years from now, you will not even be able to load electronic media most photographers offer you today! And most couples that did a few years ago can tell you that they lost most of them.

This is your first family heirloom and your one keepsake you will have forever to remember your wedding. When selecting a wedding photographer you should look for an album that best represents you and your new family. And don't forget, albums come in all qualities, shapes, and sizes.

Availability

Who will you be your photographer for your wedding day? Will it be the same photographer that takes the images for your engagement session?

With some companies, couples often will not know if they get the same photographer for an engagement session for their wedding day. Personality is a huge part of the selection process and should not be overlooked or discounted in any way. Your photographer’s personality can set the tone for your entire wedding day and your bridal party. Ultimately it can impact your wedding photography altogether.
